Valves

What are intake and exhaust valves?

The engine head valves are key components within the engine cylinder that control the flow of the fuel and air mixture into the cylinder and the expulsion of exhaust gases from the cylinder. Valves play a crucial role in the internal combustion cycle of the engine.

There are two main types of valves in internal combustion engines: intake valve (valve for intake of the fuel and air mixture) and exhaust valve (valve for expelling exhaust gases). These valves are mounted in the engine head, which is located on top of the cylinder.

What are the functions of these valves?

Intake valve (intake valve): It opens during the intake phase of the engine cycle to allow the fuel and air mixture to enter the cylinder.

Exhaust valve (exhaust valve): It opens during the exhaust phase of the engine cycle to allow the expulsion of exhaust gases from the cylinder into the exhaust system.

The valves are operated by a mechanism that includes the camshaft and lifters, which open and close the valves at the correct time during the engine’s operation. Valves play a key role in creating the necessary engine cycle and ensure the proper combustion of the fuel and air mixture, which results in vehicle operation. Maintaining the proper functioning of the valves is crucial for the engine’s optimal performance and longevity.

Do you need valves?

If you’re performing an engine overhaul, be sure to replace the intake and exhaust valves. It is important to note that there is no universal timeframe for valve replacement; recommendations are based on the specifics of each vehicle and driving conditions. If you have doubts or notice any engine performance issues, it is recommended to consult with our mechanics, who can perform diagnostic tests and recommend the appropriate steps. The necessary replacement can be carried out at our Bosch car service.
