Oil Pumps

What is an oil pump?

An “oil pump” is a device used to pump engine oil to ensure lubrication of the engine. Engines within vehicles, as well as other machinery, require a good lubrication system to reduce friction and wear of parts, thereby improving overall durability and engine performance.

How does the oil pump work?

  • Oil intake: The oil pump draws engine oil from the oil reservoir, which is typically located at the bottom of the engine.
  • Pressure: After drawing in the oil, the pump generates pressure to push the oil through the system of pipes and channels to the key points in the engine that require lubrication. This includes bearings, pistons, camshafts, and other moving parts.
  • Lubrication: The oil pumped reaches the key parts of the engine, providing lubrication, reducing friction between moving parts, and helping cool parts exposed to high temperatures.
  • Return to the reservoir: After passing through the engine, the oil returns to the oil reservoir to be drawn in again by the pump.
  • Pressure control: Many oil pumps have built-in mechanisms to control pressure in order to maintain a stable oil pressure in the engine. This is important because certain engine parts, such as bearings, require a specific oil pressure for optimal lubrication.

Do you need a new oil pump?

It is important to regularly maintain the lubrication system and check the oil pump’s functionality to avoid engine problems. If the oil pump does not function properly, it can lead to insufficient lubrication of the engine, potentially causing serious damage and failures. Contact our expert team if you have any questions!
