How Does an Alternator Work?
An alternator is an electrical generator whose function is to distribute electrical energy within the vehicle and charge the battery while the engine is running.
Generating electrical energy: The alternator operates based on the principle of electromagnetic induction. The alternator pulley is usually connected to the engine crankshaft via a belt or another type of power transmission. When the engine starts, the crankshaft begins to rotate, and this motion is transferred to the belt. The belt drives the alternator pulley, causing the rotor to rotate.
- Changing magnetic flux: The rotation of the rotor creates a changing magnetic flux within the stationary part of the alternator, known as the stator. This change in magnetic flux generates alternating current (AC) in the stator.
- Converting AC to DC: The output alternating current then passes through diodes within the alternator, which convert it into direct current (DC).
- Charging the battery: The direct current is used to charge the battery, ensuring that the battery has enough power to start the vehicle and power electrical devices when the engine is off.
