What are anodes and why are anodes important?
Anodes are key components of boats and vessels that help protect vital parts from corrosion. They are made of more reactive metals compared to the metals they are meant to protect, in other words, the electrode potential is more negative relative to the metal structures to which they are attached. When a sacrificial anode is attached to the metal that needs protection, a galvanic pair is created. Sacrificial anodes donate their electrons to the iron part of the structure, thus protecting it from corrosion. Within this galvanic pair, the zinc, magnesium, or aluminum anode is the electrode that will corrode, while the metal we want to protect is the cathode and will be protected in this way.
Within the category of maritime and nautical products, various types of anodes are offered, including zinc anodes, magnesium anodes, and aluminum anodes, each with its own specific properties and purposes.
Types of Anodes
- Zinc anodes are the most commonly used corrosion protection on boats and vessels. These anodes are preferred in salty waters as zinc reacts with water to create passive protection on the metal surface. Zinc anodes protect the propeller, hull, shaft, and metal parts of the engine.
- Magnesium anodes are ideal for use in fresh water, such as lakes and rivers. They are particularly effective in protecting internal systems like water heaters and radiators. Magnesium anodes are less toxic than zinc anodes, which is important for ecological awareness.
- Aluminum anodes offer high efficiency in both fresh and saltwater, as well as underground systems. Aluminum anodes are lighter and less toxic to the environment. Leading global manufacturers are increasingly working on replacing zinc anodes with aluminum ones due to greater environmental friendliness and less marine pollution. Aluminum anodes are lighter than zinc anodes, making them more affordable.
What does our offer of anodes include?
Motomariner d.o.o., as the importer and distributor of the Italian company Tecnoseal, offers over 2000 anodes for vessels and industry. The offer includes zinc anodes, aluminum anodes, and magnesium anodes. We also offer anodes from the Turkish manufacturer Best Anode, which is a more affordable alternative.
We can help you choose the right anodes
To maintain the efficiency of the anodes, it is important to regularly check their condition and replace them on time. Our expert team has years of experience working with sacrificial anodes and is familiar with the different types of anodes and the conditions in which they are used.
